Based upon a True Story

Veronica the cow

Did you know?

Veronica’s story began in the real world!
In Austria, high in the mountains, scientists once met a very clever cow who surprised everyone.

This cow used tools — like sticks and brooms — to scratch herself in smart ways.
She even used different ends of the same broom for different kinds of scratches!

The scientists were amazed.
They realised that cows might be much smarter than people had thought.

Veronica in this book is a make-believe character, but her curiosity and clever thinking were inspired by that real cow.
Sometimes, the most amazing ideas come from simply noticing what’s around you.

So next time you have a problem, look around.
You might already have just the thing you need!

Veronica

An Unofficial Biography (Possibly Written by Veronica Herself)

Name: Veronica
Species: Swiss Brown Cow
Home: The Austrian Alps
Age: 4 years

Special Skills: Thinking, scratching, problem-solving, patience, and enjoys helping others.

Veronica was born in a field, as most sensible cows are, surrounded by grass, mountains, and other cows who were perfectly happy doing things the way they had always been done.

Veronica was happy too.
Mostly.

But even as a young cow, Veronica noticed something important.

Some itches were serious itches.
Some itches were polite itches.
And rubbing on the same old tree did not always work.

While other cows accepted this as “just how itching is,” Veronica wondered if there might be… another way.

Early Signs of Brilliance

As a calf, Veronica showed early interest in:
– Objects humans left behind
– Sticks that were particularly scratchy
– Fence posts with good angles
– Brooms (especially brooms)

She did not show interest in:
– Rushing
– Following the crowd
– Doing things simply because “everyone else does”

This sometimes made other animals nervous.

The Broom Incident

One day, Veronica discovered an old broom.
Most cows would have walked past it.
Veronica did not.

She noticed something very clever:
– One end was stiff and scratchy
– The other end was smooth and gentle

And so Veronica did what any thoughtful cow would do.

She experimented.

Bristles for bold itches.
Handle for careful itches.

Scientists would later call this “advanced tool use”.
Veronica called it common sense.

Word of Veronica’s talents eventually spread beyond the field.

Scientists arrived.
They watched.
They blinked.
They wrote things down.

and concluded that, cows were not “supposed” to do this.

Veronica found this surprising.

After all, the broom was right there.

Why Veronica Is a Star

Veronica is not famous because she is the fastest cow.
Or the loudest cow.
Or the bossiest cow.

She is a star because:
– She notices things others overlook
– She tries ideas instead of giving up
– She helps without needing applause
– She keeps going even when others don’t understand

Why Kids Love Veronica

Kids love Veronica because:
– She’s curious
– She’s a little different
– She figures things out her own way
– She doesn’t give long speeches
– She shows that being clever can be quiet, funny, and kind

She makes mistakes.
She tries again.
She doesn’t stop being herself.

Why Parents Love Veronica

Parents love Veronica because:
– She encourages problem-solving without preaching
– She celebrates curiosity and independence
– She models patience and resilience
– She shows that intelligence comes in many forms
– She turns “being different” into a strength

And because, frankly…
A cow with a broom is very funny.

Veronica Today

These days, Veronica continues to live in the Alps, keeping an eye out for:

– Useful objects
– Interesting problems
– Other animals who might need a hand
– And, of course, a really good scratch

Her story has now wandered into a book — not because Veronica asked for it, but because sometimes the best stories are already standing quietly in a field, thinking.

And occasionally holding a broom.
