If your child loves cow facts for kids, April is the perfect month to discover just how remarkable these animals really are. Veronica — the cleverest Swiss Brown cow in the Austrian Alps — has been keeping these facts to herself for far too long. It is time to share them.

Cow Facts for Kids — 5 Things That Will Astonish Little Ones This April

1. Cows Have Best Friends

Research has confirmed that cows form close, lasting bonds with other cows. When separated from their best friend, their stress levels rise measurably — their heart rate increases, their behaviour changes, and they become visibly unsettled. Cows are deeply social creatures. They feel the absence of the animals they love.

Veronica’s best friend is Otto. He is a horse, which is slightly unconventional, but Veronica has never been one to follow convention. Otto pretends not to care. He absolutely does.

2. Cows Can Smell Things From Up to 10 Kilometres Away

Ten kilometres. That is a remarkable distance, and cows use their extraordinary sense of smell for everything — detecting predators, locating other herd members, and finding food across large areas of farmland. It also means that Veronica always knows when dinner is being prepared, regardless of where she happens to be on the farm, and regardless of how complicated the day has been.

3. Cows Produce More Milk When They Listen to Slow Music

Scientists have discovered that playing calming, slow music to dairy cows increases their milk production. Fast music does not produce the same result. Cows, it turns out, have strong opinions about their working environment. They appreciate a relaxed atmosphere and a considered soundtrack. This is, frankly, very reasonable.

4. Cows Can Recognise Up to 100 Other Cows — And Remember Who They Like

Cows remember faces. Research has shown that cows can distinguish between up to one hundred individual animals, and they keep track of their social relationships carefully. They remember positive experiences with other animals — and negative ones too. If a cow has decided it does not like you, there is almost certainly a reason.

Liesel, Veronica’s daughter, is still working on memorising everyone on the farm. She is getting there. She has, so far, successfully identified Otto, Greta, and both of the ducks near the pond. She is very proud of this.

5. Cows Spend About 8 Hours a Day Eating — And Another 8 Hours Thinking About It

Eight hours of eating requires real commitment, and Veronica respects it deeply. Cows are ruminants — they chew, swallow, partially digest, and then bring the food back up to chew again in a process called rumination. The average cow produces around 50 litres of saliva every single day to assist with this process.

The word ruminating — meaning to think something over carefully and slowly — actually comes from this bovine habit. Veronica does both kinds of rumination. Frequently at the same time.

Why Cow Facts for Kids Actually Matter

Cow facts for kids are not just fun — they are an entry point into genuine curiosity about the natural world. When a child learns that cows have best friends and feel stressed when separated from them, something shifts. Animals stop being background details and start being characters with inner lives worth paying attention to.

This is precisely the idea at the heart of the Veronica the Clever Cow series. The books were inspired by a real Swiss Brown cow in the Austrian Alps whose behaviour was so remarkable it was reported by the BBC. From that starting point came six planned books — all written to show children that intelligence and kindness appear in the most unexpected places.

You can explore more cow facts and download free activities in the Veronica’s World free library. Or find out more about the full book series, written for children aged 3–7 and designed for reading aloud.

Veronica has reviewed these facts personally and confirms they are all accurate. Otto remains sceptical about number three.
