5 More Cow Facts for Kids That Will Genuinely Blow Your Mind

More cow facts for kids — because one round of cow facts is never enough.

If you read our first cow facts post, you’ll know that cows are far more intelligent, emotional, and surprising than most people give them credit for. We had so much fun writing that one — and you had so much fun reading it — that we couldn’t stop at five.

Here are five more cow facts for kids that will genuinely blow your mind.

  1. Cows have an almost 360-degree field of vision

Cows can see almost all the way around themselves without turning their heads. Their eyes are positioned on the sides of their heads, giving them a field of vision of around 330 degrees. The only blind spot is directly behind them. This makes cows extraordinarily good at spotting potential threats — which is very useful when you’re a large animal living in an open field.

It also means that sneaking up on a cow is basically impossible. Veronica always knows you’re coming. Now you know why.

  1. Cows spend around eight hours a day chewing

Cows are ruminants, which means they have a four-chambered stomach and digest their food through a process called rumination — also known as chewing the cud. A cow will eat grass, swallow it, bring it back up later, and chew it again. They do this for approximately eight hours every single day.

If it sounds like a lot of chewing, that’s because it is. Cows take their eating very seriously.

  1. Cows are extremely good swimmers

Despite their size, cows are natural and capable swimmers. They use their legs in a dog-paddle motion and can cover surprisingly long distances in water when they need to. There are documented cases of cows swimming between islands and crossing wide rivers.

Veronica has not yet been asked to demonstrate this particular skill. We suspect she would be excellent at it.

  1. Cows produce around 200,000 glasses of milk in their lifetime

A dairy cow produces an extraordinary amount of milk over her lifetime — enough to fill around 200,000 glasses. To do this, she drinks enormous quantities of water — up to 190 litres per day. That’s roughly a full bathtub, every single day, just in water alone.

The next time someone pours milk on their cereal, they might want to take a moment to appreciate the effort involved.

  1. Cows make friends across species

We already know cows form close bonds with other cows. But they also form genuine friendships with animals of completely different species — horses, dogs, goats, and sheep among them. They recognise individuals from other species, remember them, and show clear signs of preference for certain companions over others.

Which explains a great deal about how Veronica, Otto, Liesel, Greta, and Shaun all ended up as such a tight-knit group.

Bonus fact — cows have a dominant nostril

Just as humans are right or left handed, cows show a preference for one nostril over the other when smelling new things. Scientists call this nasal lateralisation, and it has been observed consistently across herds. Cows tend to use their left nostril when investigating something unfamiliar or potentially threatening, and their right nostril for more pleasant or familiar smells.

Veronica, we suspect, uses both nostrils equally. She’s an overachiever like that.
